The fate of SDF in light of the Turkish military escalation


On November 19, 2022, Turkey launched an air military operation under the name "Claw - Sword" in Syria, against the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). In view of the size and nature of the targets that were targeted and the accompanying military movements, this escalation can be considered the biggest military threat the SDF has faced since its establishment in 2015.

Accordingly, this report provides an assessment of the impact of the current escalation and the Turkish military movements in general on the fate of the SDF and its expected future scenarios, by reviewing the influencing factors and the positions of international actors in this context.

This report helps those interested, experts, and decision-makers assess the effects of the Turkish military escalation on the fate of the SDF. In light of that, it presents a number of possible scenarios for this fate.
